Just wanted to share a few photos from our field trip. If you’re not familiar with Heifer International it’s a great organization. Kind of operates on that “If you give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day. If you teach him how to fish…”. They provide different types of farm animals to families to improve their lives. The families then pass on the gift by giving the first offspring to one of their neighbors. It’s also a wonderfully accessible charity for children. The catalog allows you to choose from a host of animals as well as bees and trees. The farm we visited is mainly an educational facility, though they do work in the US (mainly the Appalachians) in addition to around 125 other countries. We got to see examples of many of the animals including several heritage breeds, an organic garden, a sugar shack, and the global village which has examples of houses from around the world. The guides were wonderful. None of the rush that’s typically associated with “organized” field trips and very knowledgeable. Here’s a link to Overlook Farm.
