It’s that most wonderful time of year again. This weekend was the opening of our favorite orchard – Autumn Hills. They are one of the few orchards in the area that have PYO pears, if you catch them at just the right time. There is also a wonderful variety of apples including some that are very old and hard to find. The staff are all super nice and the view from the hill is absolutely gorgeous making it pretty much the perfect outing. The past few years we have been lucky enough to find monarch caterpillars to raise while gathering our fruit. Piper had this in mind as a major goal this year and even brought her enclosure. Here are Piper and Tim on the hunt…
We were lucky enough this year to have the opportunity to pick Gravenstein apples because they came in a little late. My understanding is that these are quite a treat despite the fact that they have fallen out of favor over the years. Piper and Tim thought they were one of the best apples they had ever tasted. They certainly are pretty.
Piper and I affectionately refer to these as the attack geese. Nice to see them penned up this year. 🙂
We ended up with about 1/2 a bushel of apples and a 1/2 bushel of Bartlett pears. The first apple pie of the year was very well received and gone in record time. Life is good.
