Pond vs. Tap Water

For science this week we grew some bacteria.  On our last outing to Harold Parker we collected some pond water and put a few drops on 3 petri dishes and then did the same with straight tap water.  Turns out pond water is very prolific and we had all kinds of growth overnight.  And the smell!  Yikes!  The tap water took about two days,  but it also grows, in a variety of colors.

This experiment was supposed to continue for two weeks, but given the odor every time we opened the closet we decided to cut things short.  Piper got to use her new microscope, but for safety issues we needed to keep the cover on so she didn’t get to look at things quite as closely as she might have liked.  I think I see bacteria slides in our future to go with the recently acquired pond slides.
